TIPS on how to improve your WRITING in English

Learn and Improve Your Language Skills in Four Easy Steps – Part 1: Writing

Hello! Welcome to the first part of my series on Learning and Improving Language Skills. In this four-part series, I will share tips and activities to help improve your writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. Today we will start with writing. I’m excited to share this with you!

Improve Writing in English by Reading

One of the best ways to improve your writing is by reading a lot. I learned this from my own experience as a published author. My book with 26 short travel stories is available on Amazon. It has English on one page and a translation on the facing page.

Reading books, articles, Instagram posts, and other content can help improve your writing style. Seeing how others write sentences and use words can help your writing.

It’s important to expand your vocabulary and not repeat the same words.

Using New Vocabulary

To avoid repetitive vocabulary, read more and use a dictionary. For example, instead of ‘good’ all the time, find synonyms like ‘great’, ‘wonderful’, ‘amazing’. To remember new words, use them repeatedly until they become natural.

Error Checking

Another good way to improve your writing is to have a native speaker or professional check for errors. When I was learning Italian, my friend Marika from Italy reviewed my online journal and corrected my writing. Getting feedback really helped me improve.

Matching Your Writing Style

Think about your purpose and audience when writing. You may want to work on informal writing like texting or letters. Or you may need to improve more formal writing like work emails. Each requires a slightly different approach. To improve work emails, look at example emails online and try to match the style.

Practice Makes Perfect

Practice regularly – even 10 minutes a day or a paragraph a day. This will gradually build your skills.

Set realistic goals like writing for 5-10 minutes or a paragraph daily. This will steadily improve your writing.

Let’s practice with an informal letter to a friend! I’ll write to my friend Jessica with life updates:

Sample Informal Letter

“Dear Jess,

Hey friend, how are you? I’m in Ubatuba, Brazil…or should I say uba-chuva, haha. It rains a lot here (chuva means rain in Portuguese) but we still go to the beach often. The kids love playing in the sand and I enjoy reading by the ocean. In a week we’ll drive 7 hours to our friend Jose’s for Christmas. I’m excited for a Brazilian Christmas! Let me know how you’re doing. I’d love to hear your news.

Love,Your friend Camille”

I hope this gives you ideas for casual letter writing. Now you try writing a letter to encourage someone!
