Story 30: Asking for Directions

Lena: Excuse me! Can you tell me how to get to Santa Monica Pier?

Bus Driver (Dante): Sure! You can take bus number 10. It stops right near the pier.

Lena: Great! How often does it come?

Dante: About every 12 minutes during the day.

Lena: And how do I pay for the ticket?

Dante: You can pay when you get on the bus. Cash or card works. It’s $2.50 if I’m not mistaken.

Lena: Perfect. How long will it take?

Dante: Around 15 minutes if traffic isn’t too bad. You can take an Uber and be there in 10 minutes, but it will cost about $12.

Lena: I can wait for the bus! I can’t wait to see the Ferris wheel and the ocean.

Dante: You’ll love it! And don’t forget the food stands — the tacos there are really good.

Lena: Oh, I love Mexican food.

Dante: These ones are authentic. Everyone loves them.

Lena: I’m excited to try them. Thanks again for your help.

Real-Life Tip

I can’t wait: This is the most common way Americans express excitement. While “I am excited” is correct, “I can’t wait” sounds much more natural and enthusiastic in daily conversation.

I can’t wait to see you!”

I can’t wait for the weekend.”

Questions

1. What bus should Lena take?

2. How much is the bus fare?

3. What food does Dante recommend at the pier?
