Which methods are the most effective for learning English as a second language?

There are 1000 methods under the sun for learning English. It is hard to know what are the most effective methods for learning English. The key is consistency. Study every day.

Ideally you want to immerse yourself in the language for as long as you are in your English study session. Another key is to find content one step above your current knowledge (this is known as N+1). If you do this, you will learn more effectively.

You want to study English using a holistic method in your English study session, do this:

Listening to English

Podcasts are nice if you are at a B level in English. Sometimes you can find someone who speaks slower which can help. Watch Movies and TV shoes you’ve already watched since you will have familiarity.

Reading English

Reading helps expose you to grammar structure and new vocabulary naturally and within context.

Speaking English

As hard as it is, if you can speak out what you are learning, it will stick quicker than if it stays in your mind.

Writing English

Practice forming sentences with your new vocabulary. You can also use apps like Tandem to find language partners and write to them. This gives you the benefit of learning “real life” English like slang and common greetings.

English Immersion or simulated English Immersion

If you can travel to a English speaking country, it would give you a boost because of the 24/7 immersion. If you can’t travel, you still can learn English effectively outside of an English speaking country with simulated English Immersion.

I learned 4 languages outside of the countries where they are spoken (later I was able to visit the countries and practice the languages!). It takes a bit more effort, but it is possible now with the help of technology. Simulated English immersion is taking a few hours a day and making your whole life in that English. Watch English shows or lessons, read an English book or schedule a call with an English teacher, join a LIVE lesson or conversation partner.

Keep things positive!

Don’t sabotage your English language learning with negativity! A positive mindset will help you retain more information quickly. Try to keep things positive. Set S.M.A.R.T. goals and celebrate your victories. Don’t give up and you will reach your English goals!
