How to Improve your LISTENING in English

My best tips and advice on improving LISTENING in English. I’ll also do an listening and writing exercise called dictation that is very useful when trying to improve your listening in English.

Here are my best listening tips for you.

1. Listen at your level!

Just like with reading, if you’re listening to content that’s too hard for you, you will end up discouraged. Know where your level is and find content suited for that.

2. Listen a LOT.

Listening is the hardest skill for me because everyone has a different accent. To improve your listening skills you need HOURS, DAYS, AND WEEKS of input. Feel free to use subtitles (if available) in your native language and then slowly transition to subtitles in English and then no subtitles at all. All my videos have at least English subtitles 🙂

3. Listen to the same video more than once.

The more you listen, the more likely new vocabulary words will stick in your brain.

4. Try dictation.

Dictation is a simple exercise where you listen to a small part of a video or audio. You write down what you hear. Then you look at the subtitles/text to see if what you heard matches what you wrote down. My listening course has TONS of dictation practice because it really helps sharpen your listening skills.

5. Try to understand context.

It’s okay if you don’t understand every word. You don’t have to. You don’t have to spend hours looking up every single word either. Try to focus on understanding the main ideas behind what you’re listening to. If you don’t understand anything, most likely it’s at a level that is higher than yours. Choose something more suitable.

The most important things is to be consistent.

A little each day goes a long ways! I hope I’ve inspired you to start LISTENING today!
