How to Improve your Speaking in English

My best tips and advice on improving speaking in English. I’ll also do an speaking exercise called shadowing that is very useful when trying to improve your speaking in English.

Here are my best English speaking tips for you.

1. Listen a lot.

By listening you understand the rhythm of language and you learn language patterns as well as pronunciation. Listening helps to improve your speaking in English.

2. Get out of your head.

Many people are afraid of making mistakes when speaking so they don’t speak. Stop thinking about your mistakes. You SHOULD make mistakes. I’ve made thousands of mistakes throughout the last decade of language learning. It’s normal.

3. Practice speaking English by yourself.

Practice speaking out loud to yourself about your day, what your going to do, or sharing a simple story. When you go to speak to your friends, it will flow more naturally.

4. Read out loud in English.

Reading out loud definitely helps you speak more smoothly. Again you will be practicing words in the context of sentences and paragraphs and when you go to speak in real life, it will come out more smoothly.

5. Practice shadowing in English.

Find an American English accent that you like and try to mimic that accent. Listen to their tone of voice and their speech patterns while speaking. You can try to repeat word for word what they are saying to improve your own speaking skills.

6. Practice!

Find a tutor, a language exchange partner, or a group speaking club to put your speaking skills into practice. Speaking a language well takes a LOT of time and hours of practice.

The most important things is to be consistent.

A little each day goes a long ways! I hope I’ve inspired you to start SPEAKING today!
