How to Improve your Reading in English

My best English Learning tips and advice on how to improve reading in English.

If you know me, you know that I LOVE to learn languages. I have read MANY books in French, Italian, Portuguese and most recently I finished a book in Turkish. I also WRITE books for you guys because that’s how effective I find reading when it comes language learning.

Here are my best English reading tips for you to help you learn English faster.

1. Read English at your level!

If you’re reading a book that’s too hard for you it will just gather dust in your room. You won’t make any progress at all. I recommend starting with short stories or even paragraphs.

2. Interact with the text.

Highlight new words, make example sentences of your own, and write notes. The more you practice with new English vocabulary words, the more they will stick in your brain.

3. Read the text more than once.

The more you read the text, the more likely new English vocabulary words will stick in your brain. Try reading the text out loud, listen to the text if there is the audio with it. (My books come with free audio).

4. Read regularly.

I personally have a goal to read 2 pages a day. It doesn’t sound like much, but in a year it adds up to around 3 books! Read things that are interesting to you. If you’re bored, it will feel a bit like torture. Language learning should be fun!

5. Try to understand context.

It’s okay if you don’t understand every word. You don’t have to. You don’t have to spend hours looking up every single word either. Try to focus on understanding the main ideas behind the paragraph. If you don’t understand anything, most likely it’s at a level that is higher than yours. Choose something more suitable.

The most important things is to be consistent. A little each day goes a long ways! I hope I’ve inspired you to start reading today!
