Teach your child how to brush their teeth in English

In today’s lesson and video, I’ll guide you through teaching your child how to brush their teeth in English. Proper oral hygiene is so important, so let’s make sure our kids know how to care for their smiles.

Why is brushing teeth important?

Before we start, let’s discuss why brushing teeth is important. Good dental habits prevent tooth decay (damage to the teeth) and gum disease (infection in the gums). Brushing properly also gives our kids healthy teeth and gums for life! As they say:

“Brush your teeth twice a day to keep the dentist away!”

Getting ready

First, we need to gather the proper tooth care tools:

  • Toothpaste – Choose one with fluoride that fights cavities. You only need a small, pea-sized amount.
  • Toothbrush – A child-sized brush with soft bristles is perfect.

Now we’re ready to teach our kids each step!

Step-by-step brushing guide

Here is how to guide your child through brushing properly:

Step 1: Apply toothpaste

Show your child the toothpaste and toothbrush. Gently squeeze a pea-sized amount onto the bristles.

Tip: Just a small amount is needed so they don’t get overwhelmed!

Step 2: Wet the toothbrush

Run the toothbrush under water so it glides smoothly in your kid’s mouth.

Step 3: Start brushing

Encourage them to scrub all over – front teeth, back teeth, sides, and along the gums. Thorough cleaning removes more bacteria.

Step 4: Brush for 2 minutes

Two full minutes allows time to brush everywhere needed. Use a timer or play a song!

Step 5: Don’t swallow toothpaste

Have them spit out the toothpaste instead of swallowing. Praise your kid if they do this correctly.

Step 6: Brush the tongue

The tongue harbors bacteria too, so brushing it freshens breath.

Step 7: Rinse the brush

Finally, thoroughly rinse all toothpaste off the brush.

Ta-da, smile sparkling clean! As you guide your child through these steps, also teach some vocabulary in your native language. Comparing words makes learning English more engaging.

Make it fun

Here are some tips to make brushing enjoyable:

Proper oral health routines don’t need to feel like chores to our kids! Starting good habits now prevents problems as they grow up.
