I’m so excited to show you our beautiful rental house here in northern Portugal. Explore our serene garden, cozy rooms, and breathtaking views. I hope you enjoy it and learn a LOT of English vocabulary 🙂
Welcome to my little corner of Northern Portugal! Today, I’m thrilled to guide you on a delightful tour of our home nestled in this charming country. Our home is situated on a bustling street in a quaint city where life never seems to slow down. But despite the hustle, we’ve carved out our own peaceful sanctuary. Let’s explore together and pick up some new English vocabulary along the way!

Welcome to Our Sanctuary
The moment you step inside, you’ll be greeted by our yard—a serene oasis hidden amidst the chaos of city life. There’s something special about this space that we adore so much. No matter the season, there’s always something blooming. And yes, even though January can be quite dreary and wet here, the vibrant blossoms never fail to lift our spirits.
Looking out beyond the yard, we’re treated to a stunning view of the river, with the Atlantic Ocean just a short jog away. For us, it’s a daily reminder of the beauty that Portugal offers. But let’s head inside—our tour has only just begun!
The Fruitful Garden
Before we dive into the interiors, let’s not forget the magical little eden right outside our home’s door. Our garden is home to a variety of fruit trees—tangerines, lemons, and even avocados. They add a splash of color and life to our outdoor space.
Our kids have a blast here, especially with the trampoline and the swimming pool. In the warmer months, we gather around the outdoor table for meals, squeezing fresh orange juice from our very own orange tree.
Stepping Inside
As we make our way indoors, you’ll notice that we don’t use the front door much—it’s always locked, and, truth be told, someone is bound to forget the keys! Instead, we typically enter through a side entrance that leads us into a world of coziness and comfort.
Our Kitchen: Heart of the Home
The kitchen is the heart of our home, where I spend countless hours whipping up meals for the family. Interestingly, the washing machine is placed in the kitchen, which is quite common in Europe but might surprise those from the United States.
We have all the essentials here—a dishwasher, microwave, oven, and stove. Calvin, my partner, has an impressive coffee setup, fueling us through our busy days. And yes, our island is where most of our family meals take place, surrounded by cozy chairs.
A Note on Bathrooms
Our home features a small bathroom right next to the kitchen. While it might seem a bit awkward to have it so close to where we dine, it does come in handy, especially during those bustling mornings before school or work!
The Living Space
Moving into the living room, you’ll find that this is where we gather to relax and spend time together. Unlike homes in the U.S., we don’t have central heating or cooling, but a trusty little heater keeps us warm during chilly days.
With a comfortable couch, a TV for our movie nights, and a unique coffee table made by Calvin himself, this room has everything we need to unwind. And because I’m a sucker for fresh flowers, I make it a point to buy a lovely bouquet every week.
Keep Dry and Stay Cozy
Living in Northern Portugal means dealing with a lot of rain, so a clothes dryer has been a lifesaver for us. I used to battle with drying racks, running them in and out as the weather changed, but not anymore!
Another essential appliance we couldn’t do without is our dehumidifier. The humidity here is intense, and we empty it several times a day. It’s a constant battle, but having it around makes a world of difference.
Upstairs Adventures
Ivory, our daughter, has her haven upstairs, complete with her bathroom and a cozy bed. Her room is filled with stuffed animals and Legos, reflecting her playful personality and creative spirit.
As we climb higher, we find Maddox’s room. He recently celebrated a birthday, so balloons still linger as joyful reminders. His loft bed creates a space for his desk and his vast Lego collection.
Work and Play
Adjacent to Maddox’s room is my space, designed for both work and creativity. My desk is portable, allowing me to work anywhere in the house. Whether I’m tucked inside or out in the sunroom, I’ve got the perfect view.
Personal Retreats
And finally, here’s ours—my room with Calvin. It’s where I unwind, surrounded by the art I create. A fun addition is the artwork box I have for displaying my latest pieces. This space is simple yet holds a special place in my heart.
Kairo, the youngest member of our family, has an incredible view from his room. Despite not having a bathroom like his siblings, his room is bright with an abundance of Legos and charm.
The Amazing View (especially at sunset)
Possibly the best feature of our house is the sunroom. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy our morning coffee or tea while soaking in the sun’s warmth. Even on colder days, the sunroom is like our little slice of paradise, always inviting and always energizing.
As we chat here in this sunny spot, it’s clear why we cherish this home. Though we’re renting, and the idea of making it permanent has crossed our minds more than once, we savor each moment we have here.
