8 Useful English Phrasal Verbs with Paper

Learn these 8 English phrasal verbs you can use when you talk about paper with this short video.

We don’t think about the verbs or vocabulary needed to talk about small random daily things, until we are in the real world or maybe an office setting and you all of a sudden are lacking the vocabulary or English phrasal verbs you need! Learn these phrasal verbs that you can use with paper and other objects.

You can watch the video above to help you hear them in context. When using these in the present, you can use the present continuous— example: I am flipping over the paper. I am writing down the note.

Flip over

To turn something so that the other side is visible or facing up.

Example: Please flip over your worksheet and continue working on the back.

Open up

To start or unfold something that is closed or folded.

Example: Can you open up the box and see what’s inside?

Write down

To make a note of something by writing it on paper.

Example: Don’t forget to write down the homework assignment before you leave.

Tear out

To remove something from a larger object by tearing it along a perforated line or forcefully separating it.

Example: You can tear out the page with the recipe from the magazine.

Rip up

To tear something into pieces, often in a forceful or aggressive manner.

Example: He was so angry that he ripped up the letter.

Crumple up

To crush or squeeze something into a wrinkled shape, usually with one’s hands.

Example: After reading the note, she crumpled it up and threw it away.

Throw away or throw out

To dispose of something by putting it into the trash or discarding it.

Example: Please throw away your empty water bottle in the recycling bin.
